Custom 18-Foot Press Brake Modification for a Heavy-Duty Trailer OEM

When a standard 14-ft press brake couldn’t meet an 18-ft requirement, FKI USA engineered the capability—saving the launch, the budget, and the schedule.

The challenge

A long-time OEM partner designed a single, 18-ft structural component for a next-gen trailer. Standard 14-ft press brakes made the part unmanufacturable, creating a production-stopping bottleneck. Options were bad and costly: split/re-design (added welds, weight, re-validation), or outsource to niche processes with high tooling costs and long lead times. The launch window was at risk.

The Solution

Rather than decline, FKI built the capability.

Phase 1 — Structural Analysis & Design

Modeled frame/bed/ram behavior over an 18-ft span, targeting deflection and torsion control. Designed a 4-ft extension with internal stiffening and alignment strategy. (FEA-guided.)

Phase 2 — Precision Welding & Reinforcement

AWS-certified weld team integrated the extension and reinforcement into the press brake frame, controlling heat input to preserve base geometry.

Phase 3 — Post-Weld Machining & Validation

Large-format CNC re-milling restored parallelism/flatness across the full bed and ram. Trial bends verified accuracy and repeatability on the customer’s material.

Technical snapshot

  • Max bending length: 18 ft (5.5 m)

  • Materials proven: Carbon steel, stainless, aluminum (heavy-gauge)

  • Accuracy control: Reinforced frame + post-weld CNC machining for parallelism over full span

  • Throughput impact: In-house modification minimized downtime; no external tooling delays

Business results

  • Launch protected: Parts delivered on schedule; no design split or re-validation

  • Cost avoided: Eliminated niche tooling and multi-part weldment expense

  • Supply risk reduced: Kept production domestic and vertically controlled

  • Relationship strengthened: FKI proved out an engineering-level solution, not just a one-off job
